Freedom Lake Park: Honoring Veterans and Building Community in Pinellas Park County
June 15, 2025

Located in the heart of Pinellas Park, Florida, Freedom Lake Park is a space where honor, recreation, and community pride come together. With its memorial monuments, natural beauty, and well-designed public amenities, the park is a treasured destination for locals and visitors seeking both reflection and outdoor enjoyment.

Honoring Veterans with Lasting Memorials

Freedom Lake Park’s dedication to honoring veterans is evident from the moment you arrive. The park’s most iconic feature is the 110-foot flagpole, dedicated on July 4, 1990, which towers above a granite base adorned with gold leaf plaques representing each branch of the United States Armed Forces. The monument’s inscription—“Dedicated To The Men And Women of the United States Who Have Given Their Best To Protect our Freedom And The Flag For Which It Stands”—serves as a daily reminder of the bravery and selflessness of those who have served the nation.

A centerpiece of the park’s memorial area is the impressive F-16 fighter jet, installed in 1997 and recently enhanced with a new solarized canopy thanks to a donation from Lockheed Martin. This aircraft monument, dedicated in 1998, draws visitors for both its historical significance and its striking presence. Additional memorials at the park include:

  • Submarine Centennial Monument, celebrating U.S. submarine service
  • Vietnam War Memorial with a sculpture and engraved wall of local veterans
  • Korean War Monument, marked on the 49th anniversary of the war’s start

Recreation, Relaxation, and Family-Friendly Amenities

Beyond its role as a site of remembrance, Freedom Lake Park is a vibrant hub for outdoor activities and community gatherings. Spanning nearly 33 acres, the park is home to two picturesque lakes, encircled by paved walking and biking trails that total 1.4 miles. These shaded paths, lined with mature pine trees, offer a tranquil setting for exercise, birdwatching, and quiet contemplation. The lakes themselves are popular for fishing and model boating, with dedicated docks for each activity.

For families, the park boasts a recently updated 5,000-square-foot playground, a 1,750-square-foot shaded fitness pavilion, and multiple picnic pavilions that serve as perfect venues for reunions, birthday parties, and company picnics. Dog owners appreciate the enclosed dog park, which features separate areas for large and small dogs. Meanwhile, gardening enthusiasts can utilize the community garden and its 51 raised planter boxes.

Adding to the park’s sense of community are the Memorial Trees, planted in memory of loved ones and serving as living tributes that grow alongside the city. The park’s amenities are complemented by clean facilities, ample parking, and a welcoming atmosphere that invites people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors and connect with their neighbors.

Wildlife, Wellness, and Events

Freedom Lake Park is also a haven for wildlife, particularly waterbirds such as herons, egrets, and ducks, making it a favorite spot for birdwatchers and photographers. The park’s disc golf course, designed by a professional, offers a unique recreational challenge, while the open green spaces and shaded areas encourage relaxation and play. Throughout the year, the park hosts community events and gatherings, further cementing its role as a focal point for local culture and civic pride.
